If you or a loved one are struggling with major depression, and medications have not helped, you are not alone. Ventre Medical, a leader in depression treatment, offers Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) at our Oakland Park and Hollywood, FL outpatient locations.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is an FDA-approved, pain-free option for treatment-resistant depression for clients who have tried multiple antidepressants and therapy with no success. This non-invasive approach passes magnetic impulses through a specialized hat lightly placed on your scalp to “wake up” the brain’s chemicals known to improve mood. The procedure is covered by most insurances.

What is TMS Treatment?

TMS treatment targets the prefrontal cortex, which is the key area in the brain that controls mood. This area is under active when someone is suffering from major depression. Focused magnetic pulses are used to stimulate the prefrontal cortex. This magnetic therapy restores normal function and reduces the symptoms of depression.

Some antidepressant medications cause unpleasant side effects. With TMS treatment, you will be free of those side effects. During a session, you will have a non-invasive device containing a magnetic coil placed on your head while sitting in a treatment chair. You may hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation during your magnetic therapy session.

Depression

More than 14 million American adults are suffering from major depressive disorder (MDD) annually. It’s the leading cause of disability in American people between the ages of 15 and 44.

MDD can interfere with a person’s ability to eat, sleep, work, and/or socialize. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, long-lasting symptoms may include:

  • Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood
  • Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism, guilt, worthlessness, helplessness
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities
  • Decreased energy or fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions, and sleeping
  • Weight fluctuations caused by loss of appetite or overeating
  • Thoughts of death or suicide
  • Restlessness, irritability
  • Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and pain for which no other cause can be diagnosed.

When medications are not helping reduce symptoms of depression, you may feel like you are out of options. TMS therapy can be the best option for your treatment-resistant depression. This FDA-approved treatment uses magnetic fields to stimulate the area of the brain thought to be responsible for mood disorders. Magnetic therapy is clinically proven as effective, and it lacks the side effects common with antidepressants and electroconvulsive therapy. Our Oakland Park outpatient psychiatric facility provides the best treatment options for our patients suffering from depression and other mental health disorders.

Magnetic Treatment for Depression

TMS treatments at Ventre Medical typically take less than an hour, five days a week, at our Oakland Park, FL clinic. Usually, treatments will continue for four to six weeks. You are not required to be on an antidepressant medication. During your magnetic therapy session, you will be awake and able to speak to your doctor at any time. Patients will be able to resume normal activities immediately following a TMS treatment. Transcranial magnetic stimulation and deep TMS are available by prescription only and are delivered under the supervision of a board-certified psychiatrist.

Comparing Depression Treatments and Side Effects

TMS is designed for those who are clinically diagnosed with depression and have attempted to use four or more treatments for the condition to no or minimal effect. As well, select patients must have previously undergone clinical therapy for their condition, and have no history as major neurological issues, such as strokes.

While receiving this painless outpatient procedure at Ventre Medical, located in Broward County, FL,  patients are reclined in a comfortable TMS chair. A small device will rest lightly on their head and deliver stimulation directly. Patients will be able to read, watch movies, rest, or talk to their doctor during this procedure.

Ventre Medical’s TMS program consists of a team of highly trained psychiatrists and allied health professionals who have years of clinical experience treating depression. Together, they offer the best hope for the vast majority of patients who do not respond to conventional depression treatment. At Ventre Medical, our mission is to ensure the highest quality TMS therapy to maximize success for patients struggling with major depression, so they can live the full life they desire.

Depression is commonly experienced by those suffering from substance use disorders. Our services include helping those with mental health dual diagnoses with substance abuse. Ventre Medical also provides inpatient, outpatient, and telemedicine services to our patients to provide the best possible treatment options from our Broward County psychiatric clinic.
